Both cars had recently been extensively reworked to improve cooling performance. The changes to The Boss (bigger oil cooler, better grille) are documented in Ch. 18. Before the front end mods, I had seen oil temps on track in excess of 280 F. I logged my temps throughout the day and with the new front end mods, oil temps never exceeded 217 F. I was chuffed! However, on the last two sessions of the day, I began to experience a severe shudder in the pedal under hard braking. In the end, I went to brake for a corner, felt the initial bite, and then the pedal went soft. Old tires were keeping my speeds down, so I made the corner without much distress, but on the back of a successful shakedown, I now had a new problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"bigger-brakes\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\">Bigger Brakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a July 2014 article, Car and Driver reported, &#8220;Ford claims that a 2015 Mustang GT with the Performance Pack consistently beats the lap times of the 2012\u20132013 Boss 302 in track testing&#8221; and in an interview with Terry Fair of Vorshlag Motorsports, ex-Ford engineer Marco Garcia confirmed that, &#8220;The goal on the S550 Performance Pack was to be faster than the Boss. That was the baseline and (it) far surpassed that.&#8221; That hurts, but progress waits for no one. And now I had another template for track performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Boss came equipped with big brakes &#8211; Brembo four-piston aluminum calipers over 14&#8243; rotors, but the S550 PP1 came equipped with even bigger brakes &#8211; massive Brembo six-piston aluminum calipers over 15&#8243; rotors. In 2017, a TMO member posted that he was able to fit the S550 PP1 brakes to his S197 Mustang without any modification. They just bolted up. Even better, these were factory parts with Motorcraft part numbers and could be ordered new, often at a discount, from your favorite parts warehouse, rather than paying a premium for a kit from a tuner. Compression and rebound dampening are adjusted at the same time with a single adjustment knob, using ratios pre-set by H&amp;R engineers for this specific chassis. There are twelve click settings on the adjustment knob. The dampers are an inverted monotube design and the adjustment knob is located on the bottom of the shaft.
